WHAT WE DO
"Italian for Opera Lovers" offers courses of Italian based on opera librettos. The courses cater for all levels of ability. So far, we have run 5 highly succesful courses based on the librettos of Don Giovanni, La Boheme, Il Trovatore, Madama Butterfly, Le Nozze di Figaro. AT the end of every course we organise "A night at the Opera", in collaboration with WAO. The West Australia Opera offers discounted tickets for our students, a welcome drink and a pre-performance talk. A unique opportunity to enjoy arts, culture and the company of amazing people.

It all started in 2012, when I discussed this idea with the Italian Consul in charge at that time, Dr. Adriano Tedde. From that moment on, and thanks to Adriano's unfailing support, the idea has developed into a project and the project has been runnign for over three years.

JUNE -JULY 2013
DON GIOVANNI

The Course, based on the libretto of Mozat's and Da Ponte's masterpiece, ran from mid June to the end of July 2013.
A highly successful event, culminated with a night at the Opera togheter at the end of July, hosted at His Majesty's, by West Australia Opera .  A drink with the Italian Consul in Perth, dr Adriano Tedde, and a final backstage tour, made the whole night very special and gave it a truly Italian flavour.

Find below a sample of the presentation of the first class (held 18 June 2013).
OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2014
IL TROVATORE

The course is designed to suit both beginners and intermediate students, for those who approach Italian for the first time and for those who wish to improve their knowledge of the Italian language through the text and the music of this masterpiece of the romantic Opera's repertoire.
What will you learn? Italian language grammar, syntax and conversation according to your level. In addition, we will cover historical, poetic, stylistic, formal and musical aspects of Il Trovatore's libretto.
The course's aim is to provide an overall knowledge of the Libretto. As participants you will uncover the composer's and the poet's tricks of the trade, while familiarising yourselves with the cultural and social context in which Verdi's opera was produced.

Enroll to the Course based on Le Nozze di Figaro, and you will enjoy the discovery. As you probably already know, Mozart's and Da Ponte's masterpiece represents the "sequel" of the "Barber of Seville".

OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 2013
LA BOHEME

The course was based on the libretto of Puccini's best known opera. It was an intensive course, which ran in October and November 2013, immediately before la Bohème went on stage at His Majesty last year.
The course was characterised by a multidisciplinary approach to the text. Music, literature, language, history and European culture: we drew from all these disciplines and more to help our students enjoy the show and to understand it at their best.

At the end of the performance, a public talk by Joseph Colaneri, director of His Majesty, provided an extra opportunity to learn and enjoy Puccini's work, while talking to the intepreters.
